@Foobarski I just wish I knew why I instinctively
look down on wines that use a screw top over cork. Years of propaganda saying that only cheap wines use screwtops.
I just wish I knew why I instinctively look down on wines that use a screw top over cork.
Part of that is propaganda, but … there also aren’t a lot of studies done on the long-term effect of screw caps. Cork allows wine to “breathe” in the bottle, which is why the vast majority of wineries used to lay down for 10 years their wines.
But changing tax procedures (taxed on what was sold to what was in their inventory) forced many to push aging wines onto customers. From “We shall sell no wine before its time!” to “Drink Now!” style wines.
/youtube 5C6EwLTAvHc
So the old propaganda was to poo-poo screw caps. The NEW propaganda is to push screw caps! With cork or glass stopper bottles, you still need a wrapper on them. Not with screw caps! So time-saving and cost savings. Plus the critics that pushed more fruit-forward wines. Plus less chance of brett (ruins the wine), although if the winery has it, it can still infect before capping.
As long YOU like the wine, the closure really doesn’t matter. UNLESS you want to store properly (wine celler of some sort) for 20+ years.
Of course, you do need to remember if it’s a screw cap! IIRC, someone did by accident (so used to using it, they forgot!)
@Foobarski@toddlamp agreed! But I’m reformed. My brother in law is a wine maker and he says they are superior in keeping oxygen out and wine fresh longer. However, this is Meh, so I’m going to roll the dice and try some. The worst that can happen is it underwhelms at a rating of 12/10 Mehs.
@Foobarski@MeganChapa@toddlamp
talked with a vintner a few years back in Canada and they were saying screw tops for wines that weren’t going to be laid down for a long time. And for pretty much all whites in particular.
That being said, I haven’t got the talent to be able to discern any noticeable difference.
@chienfou@Foobarski@MeganChapa I’m sure there is no connection. As @MarkDaSpark mention it was just the propaganda that makes me think a wine with a screw top is cheap and therefore bad.
@HobieCat@Rstoker
I agree, while I don’t live in OK, I normally ship to a OK address and then drive over when it arrives (I live in dry county in AR, well actually when it comes to AR, and wine, the whole state is off limits) but casemates does and quite often, ship to OK, go over hobiecat and check them out.
Contact the Winery direct today and see if they can one-off shipping to you. I believe a lot of wineries might do this. But it has to be today!
Ask here if anyone in a neighboring state can “wootleg” ( what we call it from the old Wine.Woot site).
Look over on Casemates (in the gatherings section) for a thread in a neighboring state on sharing cases. Texas has several. Many there are willing to hold your wine for you, either when you have it shipped to them or if you are sharing part of a case (thus, the “Casemates” name).
Since it will probably be the same as everyone, but tied to your account (same account name on all sites), IMO you “can” get it on multiple orders, but it will only work once per user name.
Unless of course you have multiple email addresses.
Of course, no one would have multiple Meh! accounts for nefarious (cough IRKs coughs) reasons.
I confess I did on the old site, but have been too lazy here.
@Rstoker Almost certainly. I’ve been ordering wine from CM once or twice per month since they started - with only very rare regrets.
In fact, I’m willing to make you a guarantee: If you don’t like the first bottle, sent the rest to me and I’ll drink it on your behalf.
My cellar is jammed and I’m on a SIWBM (Self Imposed Wine Buying Moratorium), but I’m in for a six-pack. I know the wine will be, at worst, an everyday sipper, and the $20 coupon makes it a no brainer.
It would take me at least a decade to go through a case of this. That’s how little wine I consume. (And for cooking, I use the stuff I can get at Aldi, because I don’t perceive any advantage in spending more for “better” wine in that.)
@chienfou There aren’t, but the statement was that the number of fingers would be odd when it was an AI-generated image, while this AI-generated image had four. I observed that five-plus-thumb would be more inauthentic. The illogic is not always trackable across minds.
The price is telling me it’s not going to be good, but the price and coupon are telling me to buy a case anyway. I guess I could cook with it, or drink it while making a displeased facial expression. Maybe it’s good mixed with Malört.
@warpedrotors
Just got back from Italy and OMG it was amazing some of the Chianti Classico we bought for this price point. Have had some wines in the US for this price that were pretty good, but most were like this offering… end of runs designed to clear out inventory and make space for new vintages.
@stinks another quote from a review there: “Juicy, round and full of red fruit. Very approachable, can be enjoyed by a wide variety of wine consumer. Kind of wine you can carry to a party and everyone will be thankful you came.”
@chienfou@mediocrebot@xobzoo because of the Malört or the recent amputation? I was going for one arm missing completely, not a hand that was just hacked off.
Sweet, I just finished the last of my case of QPR, this will at least make a nice cheap refill for my rack. Worse case it’s a cooking and sangria wine, I’m in!
@cbilyak
I’ve been trying to score wine through meh or casemates for a while and most of the time they won’t ship to Alabama. I was pleasantly surprised that this one was an exception. I’m hoping it’s not just because they screwed up their coding. I’ll find out shortly!
@chienfou fingers crossed it was not a mistake for you! Indiana is hit or miss, but it seems like it is getting worse. Wines I used to receive are no longer shipping here. Maybe it is a sign
A lot depends on the licenses each winery gets. Some states charge too much for how little is sold. Sometimes it is a mistake.
Try contacting the winery direct TODAY to see if they will do a one-off shipment to you.
Or gaze over in the Casemates “Gatherings” section to see if there’s a group in your neighboring state. Used to be a large group in the Chicago area. You might be able to share part of a case (the Casemates part) or just have it shipped to them to hold for you. Then you can pick it up when convenient for both of you or you can join a Gathering!
@cbilyak@MarkDaSpark
I can source other wines locally so not really crucial that this order goes thru. Just hope it will and is the beginning of a relaxing of the regs. I believe the state requires each winery to license separately, i.e. being a distributor of a particular winery doesn’t cut it…
@chienfou So I couldn’t resist trying this for the price and got 6. I am NOT a sophisticated wine drinker, but I think it’s perfectly pleasant. Not at all memorable, but fine. Exactly like the quote in the review above. Just letting you know what you missed out on; i.e., good but not that special.
Very approachable, can be enjoyed by a wide variety of wine consumer.
@Kyeh
Glad you were able to get it and even more glad you are enjoying it! Some day I will be able to order from here or casemates when they have wine. Meanwhile, I am going to a wine tasting on Wed at the wine shop in Montgomery!
So where’s my $20 coupon? How does one receive it or find it?
My situation may be a bit tricky. I first placed an order than decided to cancel it and reorder, which I did. The second order went through as did the cancellation. So where do I find the coupon now?
@Jackinga
if I’m not mistaken it should show up in your email. I just checked mine and it hasn’t posted yet. I think maybe they post after the sale closes out. Or possibly when they ship it. Can’t say for sure for this particular one, but it seems like in the past it has been pretty prompt.
Serves 4
2 large juice oranges , washed; one orange sliced; remaining orange juiced
1 large lemon , washed and sliced
1/4 cup granulated sugar (extra fine is best, dissolves faster)
1/4 cup Triple Sec
1 bottle inexpensive, fruity, medium-bodied red wine (750 milliliters), chilled
Add sliced orange, lemon, and sugar to large pitcher; mash gently with wooden spoon until fruit releases some juice, but is not totally crushed, and sugar dissolves, about 1 minute. Stir in orange juice, Triple Sec, and wine; refrigerate for at least 2, and up to 8, hours.
Before serving, add 6 to 8 ice cubes and stir briskly to distribute settled fruit and pulp; serve immediately."
You can add some water to the sugar first and dissolve it before adding the fruit. Basically, that’s what Simple Syrup is, sugar dissolved in water. You don’t need to mash the fruit either then.
You can also add additional fruit: Raspberries (they breakup easily, so maybe add just before serving), Blueberries, Peaches, and/or Nectarines.
Bonus is that you can eat the fruit (not the lemons, unless you’re a masochist!), which are tasty having absorbed the wine! Nom, nom, nom!
Of course, if you’ve ever made Sangría, then you know that you can’t actually pass judgment on it until it has “fermented” (so-to-speak) for at least a couple of hours. and so wait before tasting.
Went in for 6, since I already am over maxxed out on wine from CS. too many good offerings lately!
Either a daily drinker with hotdogs and burgers or sangria wine. $6.66 / bottle what could possibly go wrong? And $20 off at casemates does make it a no brainer!
(From Vivino) Juicy, round and full of red fruit. Very approachable, can be enjoyed by a wide variety of wine consumer. Kind of wine you can carry to a party and everyone will be thankful you came.
